On the occasion of What Happens to Remain Unsaid, Richard Maguire’s debut exhibition at Maximillian William, London, the artist will be in conversation with curator Gemma Rolls-Bentley.
Richard Maguire is an artist who lives and works in Aberdeen, Scotland. In January 2023, he will open his first solo exhibition at Maximillian William, London titled What Happens to Remain Unsaid. The exhibition will features a selection of graphite on paper and print works made over the past two years. Maguire studied for his undergraduate degree in Printmaking at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen; completed the Drawing Year at The Royal Drawing School, London and obtained a postgraduate degree in Printmaking from The Glasgow School of Art.
Gemma Rolls-Bentley has been at the forefront of contemporary art for over a decade, working passionately to amplify the work of queer artists and provide a platform for art that represents and explores LGBTQ+ identity. In addition to her independent curatorial practice, Gemma is Chief Curator at Avant Arte, a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art and an advisor to early stage startups, cultural projects and private art collectors. She co-chairs the board of trustees for Queercircle, a charity that supports art, culture, health and well-being in the LGBTQ+ community and she is a member of the Courtauld Association Committee. In 2022 Gemma curated The Brighton Beacon Collection, the largest permanent display of queer art in the UK, for Soho House’s Brighton Beach House. Gemma has delivered projects for a range of global institutions and platforms including The Tom of Finland Foundation, The National Portrait Gallery, Gay Times Magazine, Daata Editions, Somerset House, The Fawcett Society and many more. Her debut book Queer Art Now will be published in 2024 by Frances Lincoln.
