Independent Art Fair 2024

9 - 12 May
Booth 517

For Independent, Reginald Sylvester II presents two new works that pose questions about the relationship between painting, sculpture and framing. While inherently grounded in sculpture in both their form and production, these works take on the nature of paintings, often mimicking stretcher bars and framing devices that poke through to reveal themselves ominously. These sculptures mark the first time that Sylvester II has used aluminum to make up the entirety of a work, rather than adding it within paintings as his work has previously done, and his first time experimenting with aluminum blackener, an innovative method of adding patina – in a gesture similar to painting – to the metal surface. Sylvester II’s deep engagement with these materials reckons with their complex social, political, environmental, and technological histories, leading to an abstraction tinged with spiritual undercurrents of transcendence, resilience and metamorphosis.
