THE RISE AND FALL OF A PEOPLE

15 March 2017 – 1 April 2017

“When one person falls I feel like we all fall”

– Reginald Sylvester II

Fondazione Stelline is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Italy and debut in Europe of the New York-based artist Reginald Sylvester II.

Born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, in 1987, and currently based in New York, Reginald Sylvester II is establishing himself as one of the most promising artists of the latest generation. Characterized by a rich and varied pictorial language, Sylvester’s paintings exist in a place in between abstraction and figuration, where instinctive gestures are translated into immediate and spiritually charged communicative forms. The body of work prepared for the exhibition at Fondazione Stelline captures a particularly important moment in the artist’s career. The introspective view of Sylvester’s early works is gradually evolving into a study on the outside world, initiating a series of new reflections on how the personal sphere can interact with the collective body. Primarily focused on portraiture, these new works touch on Biblical themes to address the critical times Western society is currently facing, as the title ‘The Rise and Fall of a People’ testifies.

The opening of the exhibition coincides with the publication of Sylvester’s first monograph with an essay by Michele Robecchi.
